Farmer, where's my food?

There is a lot of talk about growing, buying and consuming local food. The phrase Organic Food has been bandied about in every discussion and write-up about nutritious & healthy food that it has become a byword for good but expensive.

Growing one's own food is not easy. It requires time and effort, money and resources. And if you want to add 'organic' to the mix, then the expense and effort become disproportionate to the actual produce you get.

It is especially difficult for commercial establishments to walk the talk. We find it easier to buy cheaper, non-organic options than to grow organic food with disproportionate inputs.

At Oakwood Forest, we push ourselves to try and make a difference. Therefore, we have set aside a small hillside slope for a terrace farm to be able to grow our own vegetables. We harvest carrots, radishes, green peas, cucumbers, saag, lemons, tomatoes and beetroot, to name a few.

The terrace farm will take some time to become fully operational. Until then, it's tough working the farms and keeping the langurs at bay. After all, who could resist a fresh, organic, locally-grown salad for lunch!
